In an exclusive interview with Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe, Devers expressed his thoughts on the past season:
“Personally, I would say it was just average. I know that I have so much more to give and more potential. If you take a look at the numbers, it was just an average season.”
Despite his impressive .271/.351/.500 slash line, along with 33 home runs and 100 RBIs in his seventh season, Devers is determined to raise the bar on his own expectations.
Facing a lot of criticism for his defense, Devers acknowledges that there”s room for improvement, especially on the defensive side. In 2023, he experienced regression in his defensive performance, posting his worst defensive season with a defensive runs saved (DRS) rating of -9 in two years. Devers believes that working alongside his new partner on the left side, Trevor Story, will play a crucial role in his defensive growth.
He stated:
“I feel (Trevor Story) is one of the best shortstops out there with his range to both sides and how his body moves. He’s like Superman there, (so) to work with him in spring training will be nice. The last few weeks of the season were much better playing with him. I felt like we played together well.”
The interview concluded with a lighthearted question from Abraham:
“Finally, the most important question: If Taylor Swift breaks up with Travis Kelce, which teammate should she go out with?”
Devers humorously replied, “Probably one of the American guys. Maybe Bobby [Dalbec]. That would be good. She seems nice, but I think he has a girlfriend already.”
